Caye Caulker has a long maritime history as a place for ships of the Spanish explorers, pirates and the British Navy. Caste wars of the 1800 forced many people to flee the mainland and settle on the offshore islands. Ship building and fishing were the main sources of income up to the early 1970’s. Since then tourism has taken over providing an income for the 1300 full time residents of the island.
Visitors will find great snorkeling, diving and fishing opportunities await them. On Caye Caulker you have a selection of more than 50 accommodations to choose from that feature modern amenities including air conditioning. There is no formal town on the island but the South end of the island is populated with colorful homes and resorts. The North end of the island is separated by a narrow channel and features a forest and marine reserve. Many unique forms of wildlife and marine species can be observed.
You can get to Caye Caulker by either water taxi from Belize City and San Pedro Belize or by air via the small east west airstrip located on the south end of the island. Round trip from the mainland via water taxi is less than $20 us dollars.
